Man attempts suicide near PM’s home

A real estate dealer, Kishori Lal Sehgal, shot at himself today afternoon in front of the Prime Minister’s house on Race Course Road, allegedly depressed over frequent fights with wife Reena. The 42-year-old, who sustained injuries on his chest, was later operated upon at the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and is stated to be stable.

Deputy Commissioner Anand Mohan has said Sehgal chose the location near the Prime Minister’s home to “sensationalise the matter”. Officers said Sehgal was inside his parked Maruti Zen when he shot at himself around 2.30 pm. The bullet hit him on the left side of his chest and travelled out of his body through the shoulder blade. Sehgal managed to stagger out of the car before he slipped on the pavement. After the initial confusion from the gunshot had subsided, a mechanic working at the Jaipur Polo Ground opposite the PM’s residence, spotted the semi-conscious man. Sehgal was rushed to the RML Hospital by a police vehicle on duty nearby.

Doctors at the hospital said the injury on Sehgal was severe as he had shot himself from a close range. In-charge of the emergency ward Dr S K Sharma said, “There was a dark black spot on his chest when he was wheeled in. He is stable now.” Police officers found the bullet in Sehgal’s car.

The property dealer was interrogated by officers in the hospital later in the evening. He told them he intended to commit suicide and had even written a two-page note sitting in his car. DCP Mohan said, “He was not getting along with his wife. He said his wife was having an affair with one Jeetu and that the couple appeared in front of the Crime Against Women Cell today to hear a case.” Sehgal had mentioned in the note that Reena had registered a case against him, falsely complaining that he had demanded dowry. His brother Govind Sehgal said, “Kishori had sent me a message on my mobile a month ago saying his wife would only withdraw the case if he paid her money.” The brother added Sehgal was depressed because he had already spent enough on the case but his wife would still not come back.

Reena is separated from Sehgal for more than two months now and lives in Meerut. The couple lived in Dwarka’s Sector 19 earlier. Neighbour Anup Gulia told Newsline that the couple quarrelled frequently and the police had to intervene once or twice. Other neighbours said the couple kept to themselves. A senior police officer said Reena had complained several times to the police. Sehgal was also once detained after such a complaint.
