CRIMES AT DWARKA

Today, two news items on law and order in Dwarka have been published. In the item in Dainik Jagran City Plus under heading “Chain-snatchings down by 70%”, ACP Mr. M S Randhawa informed that chain-snatchings are down by 70%. According to other item in Hindustan Times under heading “Crime-infested–65-yr-old shot at in Dwarka car snatching: (page 4) while trying to snatch Maruti Zen car from one Ramesh Bareja, 3-bike borne snatchers shot at him when he resisted. He luckily he survived but got seriously injured. After that, snatchers fled with his wallet, mobile phone and car. The family alleges that the nursing home where the police took him was not equipped to treat patients with bullet injuries. Though, Mr. Rajan Bhagat, spokesman, Delhi Police claimed “There is no point where the question of police inaction has risen. It was the police which took him to the hospital and he is satisfied,"

On 15th last month, 3 bike-borne-snatchers also forced 62-yr-old to hand them over his chain and ring under compelling circumstances to save himself and his grand daughter. Initially, a complaint was taken from the victim, Allegedly, the FIRs was registered after initial reluctance when there was some hue and cry, FRI was promptly registered. In the first incident, the victim is the brother-in-law of a High Court judge Ramesh Bareja. "It took him 20 minutes in a rickshaw to reach the nearest police station with the bullet still in his hand," Even as he bled, the police insisted on taking his statement before considering whether to take him to hospital or not. It was only after he called some senior police officers that they took him to the nursing home."

One such incident of firing shot to snatch the car is equal to many incidents (if not 70) of chain-snatching or pretty crimes. The snatchers have now no fear of law enforcing agencies. Now, the time has come when high authority should do something drastic to restore sense of security among Dwarkaites.
