Seminar organized by University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations
At Sri VIS, we not only believe in facilitating learning but also in sharpening our existence. We strive for excellence and aim to impart the same to our students. We aspire for international standards and our effort is to prepare our children to win acclaim globally.
Therefore, SVIS organised a seminar on “Developing Listening and Speaking Skills in Young Learners” conducted by the University of Cambridge under the ESOL programme on 26th Aug’10. SVIS played host to 22 primary level English teachers from 7 schools in Dwarka.
Principal SVIS, Ms Nita Arora welcomed the resource persons Mr. Manish Puri , Mr. Ronald Michael, and Ms Shalika from University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations. She also welcomed the participants who came from different schools. She said that the need for international standards of English in India creates new challenges for teachers and trainers of English and there is a need of development and benchmarking of English Teachers to ensure they are able to bring students who learn English as a second language up to international levels.
Mr. Manish Puri and Mr. Ronald Michael from University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations enlightened the teachers about the ESOL (English for speakers of Other Languages) Examinations for English language assessment. Cambridge ESOL is the leading global provider of English tests and certificates for learners and teachers of all ages and levels. They operate in over 140 countries and over 2 million candidates take up a Cambridge ESOL exam in a year. Cambridge ESOL has a range of language qualifications for Primary School, Middle School and High School Students.
The facilitator for the programme, Ms Shalika- trainer from Cambridge shared views with teachers on focusing on skill based learning with equal importance on Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking as well as assessing all the four skills in the schools. She shared her experience of creating an environment of fun for learning especially for a skill like English language. The seminar aimed at developing the Listening and Speaking skills for young Learners and incorporating these skills through activities in the daily classroom teaching. The teachers also got an opportunity to get acquainted with global approaches to second language teaching.
She also shared with the audience information on the Cambridge YLE (Young Learners English) tests that are available for children between ages 6 – 12 in three levels (Starters, Movers & Flyers). These tests help a child to demonstrate their English language skills that are benchmarked globally and have a positive impact on the child’s learning. Every child who takes a Cambridge Young Learners English Test receives an official Award, issued by Cambridge.
