Sapna's Profile

Sapna, an eighteen year old girl, is a budding Bharatanatyam dancer. She is a disciple of Guru Smt. Kanaka Sudhakar, a renowned Bharatanatyam dance exponent, and Founder-Director, Nrityabharati. Sapna has been learning Bharatanatyam from Guru Smt. Kanaka Sudhakar for the past nine years, from the time she was nine years old. Sapna has completed her graduation in Bharatanatyam from Nrityabharati, affiliated to Akhil Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidhyalaya, Miraj. Along with her BA programme, she is also pursuing post-graduation in Bharatanatyam.

Sapna Attavar discovered her love for dance at the age of three, when she started participating in programmes during the Ganapathi festival celebrations in Mumbai. She was enamoured by this art form through television; and was attracted by the very colourful costumes, graceful movements and elegant footwork. After the family moved to Delhi, Sapna became a disciple of Guru Smt. Kanaka Sudhakar at the age of nine. Sapna completed her XII standard from Shiksha Bharati Public School Dwarka. Right from the time she joined in 2002, Sapna received a lot of encouragement and motivation from her school. Thanks to this wonderful school support, Sapna participated and won various inter-school competitions conducted by Basava International School, Vandana International School (both in Dwarka), and also Federation of Group Housing Cooperative Societies, Dwarka, and inter-school classical dance solo competition held in Amrita Vidhyalayam, Saket. Very recently, Sapna also bagged prizes for her solo effort in an open dance competition organized by Amrapaali Kala Kendra on the occasion of Amrapaali Kala Mahotsav; and also ‘Kalolsavam 2011’, an annual dance festival organized by Kala Keralam in Gokulam Auditorium, Mayur Vihar.

Sapna has participated in most functions of Nrityabharati; and has gone on stage in the Air Force auditorium, ICCR auditorium, Delhi Tamil Sangam, Delhi Karnataka Sangha, CCRT auditorium, Kamani auditorium, etc. Sapna has participated in the Janmashtami celebrations at Birla Mandir; and at Golokdham Temple Complex in Dwarka. She has also given several performances during Durga Pooja and Ganesh Pooja festivals. Sapna has been felicitated by Senior Citizens’ Forum Vasant Kunj.

In years 2007, 2009 and 2010, Sapna won prizes in the MTNL Perfect Health Mela, an annual open Bharatanatyam dance competition jointly organized by MTNL, LIC, New Delhi Municipal Council, Heart Care Foundation of India and World Fellowship of Religions. Last year, on 25th October 2010, Sapna won the first prize for her solo “Varnam” performance in senior category in the MTNL Perfect Health Mela. She has participated in innumerable religious and social functions in the national capital.

In 2010, Sapna completed her graduation in Bharatanatyam from Nrityabharati, affiliated to Akhil Bharatiya Mahavidhyalaya, Miraj. In addition to winning the hearts of the audience, Sapna has participated and secured many prizes in solo, duet and group dances at national and state level competitions. Prominent among these are the national level annual events - Global Harmony Festival in Pune and the state level MTNL Perfect Health Mela held in Delhi every year, apart from a Rolling Shield for her school. She has given a one hour solo performance for North-West Delhi Cultural Association, Rohini. Sapna’s dances have been recorded and telecast by Doordarshan (Delhi), Sree Sankara channel (Bangalore), and Jaya TV (Chennai) where she took part in Taka Dhimi Taa, a competition amongst budding Bharatanatyam dancers.

Pursuing her first year BA programme with Elective English and French in Jesus & Mary College Delhi University, New Delhi, Sapna’s exploits are not limited to dance alone. She has many other achievements to her credit. As a member of the Bharat Scouts & Guides Movement, Sapna has participated in several camps including the All India Jamboree held at Hardwar in 2005. She was adjudged Best Guide of her school in 2004. Sapna was awarded the Rajya Puraskar by Hon’ble Lt. Governor of Delhi in April 2008. Her achievements attained a peak when she was nominated President’s Guide and received “Rashtrapathi Guide” certificate in August 2009.

Gifted with an inborn love and burning passion for this art form, Sapna’s performances are marked with intense involvement as she identifies herself with the characters she represents on stage. Her crisp footwork and clear expressions, combined with graceful yet energetic movements, have endeared her to audiences in Delhi and outside.
