Sapna wins Dwarka Torch Bearer Award

Sapna Attavar is in the news once again! Sapna, resident of Sector 4 Dwarka, and second year student of Jesus & Mary College did herself, her parents and college proud when she bagged the prestigious Dwarka Torch Bearer Award in the category Best Student – Co-curricular Activities.

Timed together with the annual launch of ‘Dwarka City Directory’ which serves as an encyclopaedia and contains every piece of useful information about Dwarka, the Dwarka Torch Bearer Awards Ceremony, is an annual event in Dwarka’s calendar. A brainchild and initiative of “Dwarka City”, the most popular newspaper of the sub-city, Dwarka Torch Bearer Awards Ceremony aims to encourage talent and recognize distinction in various fields. A benchmark of excellence, the awards are given to achievers in different areas like Best Principal, Best Teacher, Best Student (Boy), Best Student (Girl), Best Student (Co-curricular Activities), Best NGO, Best Society, etc.

The awards were given away at a glittering ceremony held at the Radisson Blu, Dwarka by Chief Guest Syed Shahnawaz Hussain, MP and former Union Minister, and Guest of Honour, Vijay Jolly, former MLA and spokesperson BJP. The spectacular award ceremony was attended by local dignitaries, VIPs, eminent citizens and residents of Dwarka. The panel of judges comprised Tushar Kumar (Chairman cum Managing Director GTM), Taruna Sehgal (Director Lakme), Charu Wahi (Principal Nirmal Bhartia School), C M Mathew (President, Federation of CGHS Dwarka) and Prakash Lal Chandani, (President IMA). The Chairman of the panel was Debasis Bagchi, Retired Inspector General of Police and CVO. All the judges possess thorough knowledge about all the happenings and businesses of the sub-city and were appointed from different fields to have an unbiased verdict. The panel of judges informed the vast gathering that each and every applicant in each category was subjected to utmost scrutiny prior to short listing of five nominees in each category. The judges confessed having a very tough time and final scrutiny was performed individually as well as collectively with prolonged discussions and deliberations, to arrive at the Best Candidate as all entries looked deserving! Consistency in performance, achievement against odds, the will to excel and regular success at highest levels were the key to selection of the winners.

Amidst tough competition, Sapna walked away with her trophy for her achievements in the field of classical dance. A trained Bharatanatyam dancer, Sapna is pursuing post-graduation in Bharatanatyam from her Guru, Smt. Kanaka Sudhakar. Having won prizes at National and State levels for her talents in this classical art form, Sapna is also a President’s Guide, being a recipient of Rashtrapathi Guide Certificate and Delhi Rajya Puraskar Award for her activities in Bharat Scouts & Guides Movement, while at school.

“I am very happy for Sapna, as all her hard work and perseverance has paid off”, said an elated Mythili, Sapna’s mother, after collecting the award on Sapna’s behalf, as Sapna was busy writing her BA Prog. Examination even as her name was announced!
