Delhi people getting ready to welcome new civic engagement rules

Rakesh Manchanda

Delhi continues to be on the growth radar of several global cities. Stories of scams, rapes, women exploitation, less wages, inflation, rising water and electricity bills all has forced the people to wake up. Delhi now demands a new rule and clear code of conduct for their elected servants and leaders.

Delhi voters as real masters are getting ready to take historical decision to set new rules for new elected MLAs. Till date since past six decades people with a strange fear and with no choice were forced to issue advance `blank` cheques to the winner traditional political party.

Who foots the privilege bills and salary to elected peoples representatives?
Where does the money comes from ?

While direct tax collection in India is pegged at Rs 4,500 crore, indirect taxes could raise Rs 45,940 crores in the last budget 2011-12. You need not be a student of Economics to see that indirect taxes are a huge burden on the people, while the low direct tax rates were a relief for the rich.

Poor do not pay direct tax due to less income but are forced to pay or unknowingly pay rising indirect taxes. Salaries and perks given to elected leaders comes from the indirect VAT taxes generated by workers and common man and not from the pockets of rich income tax payers.

Elected servants in any country are full time service coordinators to run governance and to fulfill promises. Like it or not leaders are paid employees who do not work like a common man in a productive wheels from agricultural fields to factories. MLAs and MPs are supposed to monitor just distribution of wealth with effective laws in the various wheels of productions and consumption.

Common man works hard to generate wealth and more jobs and foots the bill of his elected servants. There was no trend of servants or paid elected leaders going back to masters to get the weekly or monthly audit. At present there is no trend of servants going back to masters to get the weekly or monthly audit.

New fashionable slogan catching up fast is :
Stop issuing unsafe blank cheques to Delhi servants for five years. Reason ? It is very difficult to monitor growth and expenses from 99% pockets after five years and the end of five years. Debt burden on city is so heavy no one knows how much. Why the MLAs has spend and how much in five years ? In a usual employee-employer relationship blank cheque or cash audit needs to cleared after every five days.

Thanks to the new political breeze. With entry of AAP- Aaam Admi Party or the Ordinary Man`s Party there appears a collective guarantee to ask the servants to explain the social and cost audit say after each five weeks to ensure corruption free governance.

Eight past days recently were spend by Delhi voters with a Governance deadlock. Bang On ! people in big crowds now hang out to dress up as real masters for the first time to celebrate their new freedom. The mission for referendum was a guidance to new servants in Jan Sabhas or Peoples Parliament called by AAP.

Participation with consultancy is the new buzz word to shoot problems. Peoples Parliaments called Mohalla Samittis with directives as complimentary pressure group to conventional parliament are getting shaped up fast.

Many voters find it ridiculous and comical as to why the royal elected leaders should come back to the real masters-the people. It appears that such voters in minority are either in a mischief mode or are still in a state of fear of past ruling elite. They are not ready to wear the master`s shoes and exercise fair control on the servants. Disunited and weak citizens in the past were forced to allow their elected servants to serve the 1% Corporate but from the hidden back door. Post election scenario in the past would mean money in hidden power citadels getting exchanged and poaching of independent MPs was fashionable.

Distance between governance and People is drastically reduced. Speed of people empowerment is amazing. Battle of peoples referendum via SMS, mails, road side parliaments is won but the real war for justice and Governance is still to begin.

`Delhi` which was unhappy to be named as unsafe rape city is getting ready for a new process. People are redefining their relationship with `Netas`/leaders as law makers who used to treat voters as their servants while forcing them to pay blank cheques. In the past leaders advised voters to come back after five years.

Work culture from Minister (Mantari) to Peon (Santri) needs to be corrected first with a clear link to productivity and pending home work of 18 promises made to people by newly elected AAP.

The chain of survival and alert Delhi governance can be made simple and smooth by AAP if it implements what it preached. The new ministers instead of taking oath in guarded British palaces or Parliament took oath in open cultural park called Ramleela Ground and traveled via metro train. The Red Batton (lal batti) cars that used to stops traffic and harms Public will not be used by ministers. No VIP invitation for oath taking ceremony was printed or circulated.

More then such popular measures it is P2P (People to Politicians) relationship that needs a sustainable audit and a change. Mechanism that delivers safe laws and safe work culture for production and consumption of materials and thoughts needs to be fine tuned.

After Radia Tapes,Wikki Leaks,3G,coal scams and unending scams, everyone knows it is difficult to cater to people’s expectations. Politicians till date continue to be the worst enemy of 99% people while slaves of 1% Corporate. No time management and no sensible law to delivery work in time adds salt to the recession wounds. All these institutions need reforms. Without any real change in delivery system with respect to people you cannot fool people again and again.

Hope the year 2014 witnesses a real alive newer New Delhi –Safe New India with new plans to take care of the hard earned money of majority.

Let us grab our management command buttons.
Delhi common people today say : Yes ! Another World is Possible !

Prembabu Sharma

The Newbie on the block Anisa who made an Impressive lead debut in ‘Baat Bann Gayi’ is unhappy these days not because of any professional reason but by not being able to celebrate Christmas and New Year with her family in London.

When we spoke to Anisa about this news and she confirmed to us and said, "Yes, it’s true that I couldn’t celebrate Christmas with my family in London due to shoots and performances. I miss them terribly. This is the first time I was not with them during Christmas. ‘Civil society recommends rejection of Parliamentary Committee report on amendment of RTI Act ’

The amendment made in the RTI Act by the Parliament that proposed to keep political parties outside its ambit has been approved by the Parliamentary Committee, entrusted with the task of reviewing it despite much opposition from civil society organizations and citizens.

In a landmark decision on June 3, 2013, the Central Information Commission (CIC) pronounced that the political parties (INC, BJP, CPM, CPI, NCP and BSP) are public authorities under section 2(h) of the RTI Act. The Government brought an amendment to the RTI Act excluding political parties from its ambit.

However, due to mounting public pressure, the Parliament chose to refer the Bill to the Parliamentary Committee, which invited suggestions on the proposed amendment to the RTI Act. ADR was one of the organizations which made its submission apart from NCPRI, MKSS, Subhash Chandra Agarwal and Shailesh Gandhi among others. All of them strongly objected to the amendment.

Rejecting Parliamentary Committee’s nod to the amendment, Prof. Jagdeep Chhokar, one of founder members and trustees of ADR, said, “The committee has not given any logical reasoning for its recommendation in its report. Excluding political parties from RTI Act is unconstitutional. It is odd to argue that transparency is good for all state organs but not for political parties, which in reality control all the vital organs of the state.”

Expressing a similar view, Shailesh Gandhi, ex-CIC, stated, “The standing committee doesn’t appear to have taken into account objections to the RTI amendments submitted by the civil society organizations. No arguments have been given in the report which indicate that the committee has noted our objections. It is obvious that no reasons were taken to counter our views before suggesting construing citizen’s fundamental rights.”

Mr Subhash Agarwal stated, "Report of Parliamentary standing committee recommending that CIC-verdict holding political parties being covered by RTI Act is not justified because according to the committee it was not intent of legislature to cover political parties under the transparency Act. There are many bodies claiming not covered under RTI Act but are declared public-authorities by Information Commissions and even endorsed by High Courts as public-authorities. None of such bodies were ‘intended’ specifically by the legislature to be covered under RTI Act. Surprisingly, the committee has overruled Attorney General’s advice that any legislative step against CIC-verdict may be struck down by courts. It is not appropriate that it may become compulsory to involve precious time of Supreme Court in every matter to get things done in public interest."

Anjali Bhardwaj from NCPRI also questioned the Parliamentary Committee’s approval to the Bill, saying, “NCPRI has consistently held that the proposed amendment to RTI Act is unconstitutional. Political Parties ought to be covered as public authorities under the RTI Act. There is no rationale for people who made the law to keep themselves out of its ambit. We feel there are adequate exemptions under section 8 of the Act. The law doesn’t need any amendment.”

Justifying its decision to amend the Bill the Government said – The political parties are neither established nor constituted by or under the Constitution or by any other law made by Parliament.

An authority or body does not require to be established or constituted by or under the constitution or any other law made by the Parliament, to be called a public authority. According to Section 2(h) of RTI Act, an organisation that is ‘substantially financed, directly or indirectly by funds provided by the appropriate Government’ can also fall under the category of public authority.

The Government also claimed – “There are already provisions in the Representation of the People Act, 1951 as well as in the Income-tax Act, 1961 which deal with the transparency in the financial aspects of political parties and their candidates.”

However, an analysis by Association for Democratic Reform (ADR) of Income Tax returns for six National Political Parties and the statements filed by them with the Election Commission show that over 75% of the funds cannot be traced and are from ‘unknown’ sources.

Another point made by the government was – Declaring a political party as public authority under the RTI Act would hamper its smooth internal working. Further, the political rivals may misuse the provisions of RTI Act.

The above-mentioned claim of the Government does not hold much ground as the RTI Act has enough built in protection in the form of the section 8- “Exemption from disclosure of information.”

The Parliamentary Committee observed that none of the six political parties, who happened to be respondent to CIC Order of 3rd June, 2013, has challenged the order in the higher judiciary which is a case of misrepresentation of a clear provision of law.”

However, the correct and the established practice for a party aggrieved by a decision made by the CIC, is to go to the High Court to challenge the CIC’s decision. If this is a case of ‘misrepresentation of a clear provision of law’ there is no necessity of an amendment of the law.

Power Tariffs ..... An open letter to CM Arvind Kejriwal ...... from people who kept the Pot Boiling

Dear Mr. Kejriwal,

Congratulations on becoming the Chief Minister of Delhi
and we wish you success in accomplishing the promises made to the citizens and in giving us an efficient corruption free administration.

The RWAs of Delhi have been representing to DERC on issues of Power Tariffs over the past ten years and have researched and collected a lot of Documents that suggest that all is not well in the way DISCOMS operate in the Capital and have been given LOOT KI CHOOTH (Licence to Loot).

Your promise of 50% Tariff reduction is a Possibility ????????? that may be achieved but will need many months if not longer as there are many procedures and steps taken which cannot be speeded up.

For CAG Audit there have to be first Complete Record and you will be surprised to know that since 2004 a Prudence Check has not been conducted by DERC so on what grounds will CAG conclude the correct figures. Like wise at the time of transfer from DVB the Asset Register of all that was handed over to DISCOMS has yet not been made. Many such irregularities have been allowed for DISCOMS to PROFIT AND PILFER. Do not forget how Indian Files develop feet and go hide far far away when those in Power Develop Cold Feet ..... remember Coal Gate Files.

Putting the house in order will take time but I wish to suggest THREE things that you can issue Orders for implementation that will give relief to the citizens without even touching the Tariffs.

1. Order the DISCOMS to Disable the Recording of Units in the Neutral Wire by the Electronic Meters (failing which install new meters that comply). The earlier Mechanical Meters did not record Flow of current in the Neutral Wire and only recorded the current flow in the one in use amongst the three Phases. We have been asking the DERC since 2009 to stop this practice of fleecing the customers by DISCOMS. These Meters record the Highest Current flowing in the four wires so if I am using an AC and my neighbour only has a tube light on .... the current in his Neutral will be higher because of my AC than in the Phase giving current to the tube light.

Why it happens ...... Due to Common Neutral and imbalance during Peak Load in the Three Phases and to Balance the three Phases current flows in the Neutral Wire which is common to all Consumers. This current is called Residual Back Flow. The Electricity Act recognises this and provides for a BUSBAR to be installed by the Service Provider and that no Neutral Looping should be done so that one Consumers consumption does not affect the billing of others connected to the Common Neutral.

2. Over Provisioning or Surplus Power purchased to give 24 X 7 Uninterrupted Power Supply is a convenient tool to Fleece Citizens. While some backup is necessary but todays scientific systems provide for accurate prediction of consumption patterns. If still there is over demand then Power to Areas showing over 75% theft should be switched off. While it is shown that Distribution losses are only 15% average ..... on careful study it is noticed that there are many Areas reporting 60% to 98.98% theft ...... MOST OF THESE ARE IN MIXED OR INDUSTRIAL ZONES and have been identified. Why should Honest Consumers Pay higher Tariffs to give uninterrupted supply to Thieves or Vote Banks.

Why it Happens ...... Actually Power Theft is DISCOMS business necessity, how else will they hide the unearned profits due to Residual Back Flow that makes the Meters run fast. If there was 0% or even 10% loss then they will be caught easily as the billing will be more than the electricity supplied and a bigger Racket running into thousands of cores of unearned profits will be revealed. We have Data that shows Negative Loss in hundreds of Transformers.

3. File an FIR with Criminal Charges for wilful cheating of consumers by installing Electronic Meters by DISCOMS at a huge capital expenditure and earning assured 16% Return On Investment to LOOT US. The earlier Mechanical Meters may not have been recording small flow of current like Mobile Chargers or Zero watt bulbs but that would not be more than 2% - 3%. Instead they are now collecting over 30% extra profits for power they never supplied and adding salt to injury 5% energy tax and 8% surcharge ..... maan gaye ustaad.

Why it happens ...... We suspect (we know) that the DISCOMS get into side deals with Bulk consumers in the Theft prone area to hide the true picture from emerging (thousands of meters are shown to have ZERO reading with obvious consumption) and make neat unaccounted profits for easy payoffs to please the powers that be.

Learning disabilities amongst the students

Dr. M. C. Jain
M.A. Ph.D. (Psychology)
Ex-Associate Professor, NCERT

“Learning disability “is a very common word which we usually come across in the class room situation. It indicates limited ability in learning. When a child or a person is having inadequacy or limited ability in learning a wide variety of tasks involving different levels of intellectual functioning he can be can be considered to have general mental retardation. On the other hand if the limitation is restricted to certain areas of learning, especially language and number related areas, he can be considered to have learning disability. In order to differentiate the two kinds of limitations, of the term “ General Learning Disability” is suggested as a equivalent for mental retardation and the term “Specific Learning Disability “for disabilities observed only in certain areas of learning . The specific learning disabilities are usually indicated as reading disability, writing disability etc. In fact learning disability is retardation, disorder, or delayed develop spelling, writing or arithmetic. These problems are due to disorder or deficiency in any one or more of the basic psychological processes involved in understanding or in using spoken or written language. They do not include learning problems which are due primarily to visual, hearing or motor handicaps, mental retardation, and emotional disturbance or to adverse environment factors.

Learning disabled children generally have normal or above average intellectual ability. It means they reach most of the developmental milestones at the appropriate age level or even sometimes earlier. They are benefited by casual experiences in their life and acquired knowledge and skills essential for leading normal life. Usually they are not easily differentiated from normal population .They may go undetected till they experience continuous failure in academic skill. But a closer look at them reveal that they have certain characteristics which though observe among other children of same age and intelligence, are manifested in their behavior to a significantly greater extent than others. These characteristic may be persistent for a longer time in their life time than others. The acknowledge of such characteristic and their behavioral manifestation are useful in identifying the learning disabled at a very early stage itself .Such an early identification helps in taking proper remedial measures at the right time, so that further problems like hyperactive, hypo active, inadequate coordination, poor tactile kinesthetic discrimination, poor visual discrimination etc. etc. can be either prevented or at least reduced considerably.

Some suggestions for the Parents and Teachers for overcoming behavioural problems among Learning Disabled children ----

Learning disabled children exhibit difficulty in self –discipline in relation to himself as well as in relation to others. More specifically they deficiency in the ability to cooperate to pay attention , ability to organize , ability to cope with new situations, social acceptance ,ability to accept responsibility ,completion of assignments and tactfulness.

1. Observe carefully how the child behaves while undertaking an individual or a group work, and see whether the child has adequacy in the required personal and social skills to successfully complete the task. Make a note of the strengths and weaknesses of the child.

2. To create a situations which enhance the possibilities for application of a particular skill or set of skills.

3. To develop ability to organize the child should be helped to analyze the task in hand into different sub-task and to mentally organize them keeping in mind the sequence of the sub-tasks, materials required, availability of time and space to carry out them.

4. The child should be made realized that there is pleasure in accepting the responsibility and carryout it successfully.

5. The social skills like cooperation and tactfulness can be developed through group activities and social situations that will be there in the normal course of life within and outside the school.

6. In order to enhance the meaningful and active participation of learning disabled children in parties, excursions, etc. it is better to discuss about these programme in the class-room situation and in the home environment.

7. Development of cognitive skills like concept development, comprehension, perception, memory, integration, analysis and synthesis ,academic skills like reading, writing , arithmetic and social skills like cooperation, tactfulness, acceptance or responsibility , completion of assignment adjusting to new situation ,social acceptance need not be achieved in isolation.

8. The routine activities- and extra-curricular activities can be made use of for the development of various abilities. The plays/games are especially useful in this direction. Instead of letting the child to play themselves teachers/parents should also involve themselves in the games and give directions to the child.

Hatred…Betrayal...Deceit...Destruction… These are words that we seldom associate with the warm feeling of love. With the launch of Rangrasiya, COLORS, for the first-time, redefines hate while exploring the mystique of love. Theatrically shot in the harsh rugged desert terrains along the boundaries of Rajasthan, Rangrasiya breaks away from the cult of conventional soaps, and sets out to negate all known perceptions of love. Produced by the makers of the blockbuster love story Madhubala…Ek Ishq Ek Junoon, Nautanki Films is all set to unveil yet another great saga with Rangrasiya that premieres on 30th December 2013, every Monday to Friday at 9.30PM, on COLORS.
Sanaya Irani as Paro and Ashish Sharma as Rudra at the Launch Press Conference of Rangrasiya

Speaking about the show, Prashant Bhatt, Weekday Programming Head –COLORS, said, “We share a great working relationship with Nautanki Films and are looking forward to re-creating magic on screen with a gripping and edgy storyline like Rangrasiya. With the show, we wish to unravel a new narrative that captures every emotion including love, hate, joy, sadness, pain, guilt, bitterness, hope, aspiration, and vengeance. Through the compelling portrayal of the explosive relationship between Paro and Rudra who are inadvertently destined to meet, we hope our viewers will enjoy this unconventional love story presented to them.”

Rangrasiya is an edgy love story ignited by intense hatred and fuelled by circumstances that bring a simple village girl, Paro (Sanaya Irani) and army officer, Rudra (Ashish Sharma) together. For Rudra, love is need-based, beauty is deceit, and work is duty and for Paro, love is hope, beauty is extreme and duty is vengeance. The show has been shot extensively across arid terrains and rann of Jaisalmer and dunes of Jodhpur.

Speaking about the launch of his second venture on COLORS with Rangrasiya, Saurabh Tewari from Nautanki Films, said, “My association with COLORS goes back more than five years and the channel’s DNA is engraved in me. The USP of the show is that every character other than the heroine is grey; she has her own journey to endure. There is no villain, but every character is real in terms of characterisation. The hero does not confine to the usual norms that are seen on television today.”

Adding to this, Abhinav Shukla from Nautanki Films, said, “With the success of Madhubala on COLORS, we wanted to raise the bar for Rangrasiya in terms of the visual scale and narrative. From visual conceptualisation, to the scale and experimentation with the characters, everything is real.”
L-R:_Prashant Bhatt-Weekday Programming Head- COLORS, Sanaya Irani,
Saurabh Tewari, Ashish Sharma & AbhinavShukla

Speaking about her newest venture on television, Sanaya Irani aka Paro, said, “I took up Rangrasiya as a challenge because I was eager to experiment with my character as Paro; and it wasn’t really easy portraying her. Walking barefoot in the scorching desert gave me blisters on the soles of my feet, but that did not deter me in any way. The excitement to do something different enabled me to move on. I am thoroughly enjoying every moment while shooting for Rangrasiya and I hope that my fans will take delight as I reprise the role of Paro.”

Commenting on his role, Ashish Sharma aka Rudra, said, “For portraying the character of Rudra, my keyword was intense. Everything I did, even in my day-to-day life incorporated that sentiment. Rudra is a rebel in every aspect of the word. With my portrayal of Rudra, I hope to find the love of audiences through the despise they feel for my character. That will be my ultimate win!”

The story is set in Birpur, a small village that witnesses a grand wedding celebration between borders once every year. One such wedding is that of Paro that is gatecrashed by the BSD, led by Rudra to investigate the illegal smuggling of arms and ammunition. However as fate would have it, this incident shatters Paro’s life leading to an unexpected turn of events.

Rangrasiya boasts of a strong and dynamic ensemble cast which comprises of noted actors like Sadiya Siddiqui, Tarun Khanna, Ananya Khare and Neha Narang who will be seen supporting the lead pair of Sanaya Irani and Ashish Sharma on the show. Rangrasiya is directed by ace director Siddharth Sen Gupta of Balika Vadhu fame.

Come…Experience a Love that threatens to Destroy; as COLORS launches ‘Rangrasiya’ starting 30th December, 2013, every Monday to Friday at 9.30PM!

An open letter to Arvind Kejriwal

Dear Arvindji,

I address you thus, rather than ‘Hon’ble Chief Minister’ or any other pompous titles as I know you are also an AAM AADMI like any of us.

I watched the swearing-in ceremony and listened to your speech with great interest. I also received telephone calls from many of my friends across the country and the topic revolved around the new government in Delhi.

Arvindji, I write this with mixed feelings. As you yourself mentioned, you too are not devoid of Fears. Like all of us, your mind too is full of qualms and uncertainties. No one would realize better than you that the Expectations from you at this point of time are sky high. However, the Confidence that you inspire is to be seen to be believed. The Conviction you exude is what makes the AAM AADMI feel Confident about the Future.

The problems faced by the people of Delhi – and our country - are countless. For most of them, survival itself is a struggle. With every change of government people cradle the fond hope that things would turn better, that there would be enrichment to their daily lives. At the same time, there are many who have turned cynical, thanks to the non-performance, under-performance or negative performance of previous governments.

You rightly said that you do not have a magic wand to solve all the problems Delhi is grappling with. Change – and that too Positive Change – is something that takes place over a period of time. While degradation can set in rapidly, improvement has a longer gestation period and could take years – or even generations. This is probably what makes the future scary for you as people expect positive change overnight. Moreover, public memory is short and the honeymoon period shorter still. The PEOPLE can very well sweep you and your government away as swiftly as it brought you into power. I know you are not obsessed with power. Survival of your government is not a matter of concern for you. But, it is indeed a matter of concern for the AAM AADMI.

Like a sculptor that chisels away and does not notice the progress made with every stroke, you too need to stick to your task assiduously. I need not remind you that the swearing-in ceremony was not the end – IT WAS ONLY THE BEGINNING. Your perseverance has made you see the light of this day. Your tireless efforts are required even more at this juncture if you are to do justice to the confidence imposed in you by the PEOPLE.

The winds of change are slowly, but surely, beginning to blow. What has happened has come like a BREATH OF FRESH AIR. PEOPLE of Delhi have spoken. They want a CHANGE. Even if promises regarding water and power are not solved instantly and fully, PEOPLE will appreciate if corruption levels are brought down if not eradicated altogether. Public outrage against scams and swindles and scandals was evident in the last elections.

PEOPLE are fed up with the other political parties. They do not aspire politicians who think of the next election – rather THEY CRAVE FOR STATESMEN WHO THINK OF THE NEXT GENERATION.

‘Be the Change that you want to see’ - so spoke Mahatma Gandhi. You are that CHANGE. You need to bring about a CHANGE in the ‘so-called ruling class’. You have reminded that the ruling class is nothing but ‘servant’ of the PEOPLE. The PEOPLE are Almighty. You exhorted your ministers not to be overcome with pride. This advice could not have come at a more appropriate moment.

That you conduct yourself as an AAM AADMI even after becoming Chief Minister is TRULY COMMENDABLE. However, you need to take care of your safety as you would have made many enemies in your efforts to cleanse the system. Do not compromise your safety as the nation needs people like you.

Keep up the good Arvind. Good luck and God bless. The COMMON MAN has done his duty as a citizen in accompanying you on the first step of your journey. On my part, I wish you Godspeed and aid you with my prayers. May God watch over you, guide you and protect you on your JOURNEY.

And, last but not the least, do something about that persistent cough. Your health is equally important.

Science behind regrets

Dr K K Aggarwal
Padma Shri and Dr B C Roy National Awardee
President, Heart Care Foundation of India

In a US–based study, dying people were asked about their regrets, if any. The top five regrets were:

1. I wish I had the courage to live a life I wanted to live and not what others expected me to live.
2. I wish I had worked harder.
3. I wish I had the courage to express my feelings.
4. I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends.
5. I wish I had let myself to be happier.

Regrets are always based on suppression of emotions or non-fulfillment of desires and needs. These need–based desires can be at the level of physical body, mind, intellect, ego or the soul. Therefore, regrets can be at any of these levels.

I did a survey of 15 of my patients and asked them a simple question that if they come to know that they are going to die in next 24 hours, what would be their biggest regret.

Only one of them, a doctor said that she would have no regrets.

Only one person expressed a physical regret and that was from a Yoga expert who said that her regret was not getting married till that day.

Mental regrets were two.

1. A state trading businessman said, “I wish I could have taken care of my parents.”
2. A homeopathic doctor said, “I wish I could have given more time to my family.”

Intellectual regrets were three.

1. A lawyer said, “I wish I could have become something in life.”
2. A businessman said, “I wish I could have helped more people.”
3. A retired revenue inspector said, “I wish had married my younger child.”

Egoistic regrets were two.

1. One fashion designer said, “I wish I could have become a singer.”
2. A housewife said, “I wish I could have become a dietician.”

Spiritual regrets were six.

1. A Consultant Government Liaison officer said, “I wish I could have made my family members happy.”
2. A businessman said, “I wish I could have meditated more.”
3. A Homeopathic doctor said, “I wish I could have spent more time with my family.”
4. A reception executive said, “I wish I could have spent more time with my parents.”
5. An entertainment CEO said, “I wish I could have taken my parents for a pilgrimage.”
6. A fashion designer said, “I wish I could have worked more for the animals.”

In a very popular and successful movie, Kal Ho Na Ho, the hero was to die in the next 40 days. When asked to remember the days of his life, he could not remember 20 ecstatic instances in life. This is what happens with each one of us where we waste all our days and cannot remember more than 50 or 20 of such instances. If we are given 40 days to live and if we live every day ecstatically, we can get inner happiness. Therefore, we should learn to live in the present instead of having a habit of postponing everything we do.

We should learn to prioritize our work and do difficult work first otherwise we will be worrying all the time till that work is over.

I teach my patients that they should practice confession exercise and one of the confessions is to talk about your regrets and take them as challenge and finish before the next Tuesday. When working, there are three things which are to be remembered – passion, profession and fashion. Profession is at the level of mind, ego and spirit.

We should convert our profession in such a manner that it is fashionable and passionate. Passion means working from the heart and profession means working from mind and intellect and fashion means working the same at the level of ego which is based on show–off.
