25TH ROAD SAFETY WEEK KICKED OFF WITH A MARCH.


THE CAMPAIGN TITLED ‘WHEN ON ROAD PEHLE AAP’

Mr Vijay Chibber, Secretary, Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) kicked off the new traffic campaign ‘When on Road Pehle Aap’ as part of the 25 the National Road Safety Week at India Gate today. A march by students, Delhi Traffic police personal and various NGO’s was the major highlight of the campaign.

The Road Safety Week is being organised by the Delhi Traffic Police in association with the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM,) ’, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and the India Chapter of the International Road Federation (IRF).

The march commenced from C-Hexagon point at India Gate and will move along Rajpath, Ashoka Road, Rajendra Prasad Marg and terminated at Jawahar Bhavan .

" The campaign Pehle Aap has been initiated to make Roads safer. Discipline drivers and bring down number of deaths due to road accidents.

India accounts for 10 per cent of the total road accident deaths in the world.” Said Mr Vijay Chibber speaking on the occasion.

“ Delhi Traffic Police has initiated various steps to discipline road users in the capital including e-challaning, use of camera’s and continuous road safety prorammes. This has helped in bringing the fatal accident figure to 1800 during the year 1013 as compared to more than 2000 in the previous years”aid Mr Taj Hassan, Special Commissioner Police, Traffic.

“Delhi Traffic Police along with International Road Federation (IRF) has started a major initiative of installing retro-reflective tapes covering ten lakh bicycles in the capital. More than 25,000 bi-cycles have already been fixed with reflective tapes free of cost. This helps make bicycles a safer mode of transportation on various busy roads , particularly during late hours. The campaign is being carried out in 57 locations identified by the Delhi Traffic Police in various parts of the capital in five phases.” Said Mr K.K.Kapila, Chairman, International Road Federation speaking on the occasion.

The others who were present on the occasion included Mr Anil Shukla, Additional CP, Traffic, Mr I.V.Rao, from Maruti and Mr T.K.Amla from CRRI
