Green gardening including Soil-less (Hydroponics), container and vertical gardening is fast catching up with land challenged green thumbs of Delhi and rest of National Capital Region (NCR)

Some of the square foot new eco-friendly gardening concepts which are fast replacing the grass lawn with native wildflowers, bushes, and trees provides the food, shelter, and cover that help to maintain healthy, natural eco-systems and reduces one’s time, cost and labor working on the lawn are being displayed by kitchen gardeners at the two day Vegetable ,Fruit and Flower show organised by the All India Kitchen Garden Association (AIKGA) which opened here today at Gulmohar park .

“This year AIKGA has shifted the focus and theme of the show on Eco-friendly gardening which includes hydroponics, Aquaponics, vertical and rooftop gardening as this trend is becoming popular world wide for growing vegetables ,fruits and fish round the year." said Ms Bella Gupta, Secretary, All India Kitchen Garden Association (AIKGA) .

“Grass lawns in houses and offices often require chemicals and frequent maintenance. The concept of eco-friendly gardening which including replacing the grass lawn with native wildflowers, bushes, and trees provides the food, shelter, and cover that help to maintain healthy, natural eco-systems and reduces one’s time, cost and labor working on the lawn” said Mrs Gupta.

“ Eco-gardening includes concept of encouraging growth of birds and bee friendly plants, use of home grown compost and used tea fertilizers, use of discarded plastic bottles and containers, rain water harvesting, use of Aquaponics (growing plants along with fish) . Besides eco gardening, the festival is also focussing on roof top farming and vertical gardening which helps provide the decorative benefit, food, temperature control, hydrological benefits, architectural enhancement, recreational opportunities, and in large scale it may even have ecological benefits. The practice of cultivating food on the rooftop of buildings is becoming popular world wide” said Mrs Gupta .

The hydroponics system entails growing plants in water as opposed to soil, the traditional base. The roots of plants are placed in a container of water mixed with the necessary nutrients, and the upper part of the plant is separated from the liquid and held firm, using Styrofoam, Because it does not require lots of yard space and hard manual labour.

The other highlights of the spring festival are painting competition, session on eco gardening, sale of garden related items, farm fresh vegetables, seeds and plants for summers. Various chapters of the association in Delhi and National Capital Region will be presenting whole range of nutrition food and related recipes to meet the needs of changing lifestyle

In the history of the scientific revolution of India, Sir CV Raman has a prominent place. He was the first Indian scientist to win the Nobel Prize for his famous discovery named after him as ‘Raman Effect’. Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman was born in 1888 in a small village, near the then Trichonopoly in Tamil Nadu. When he was just 15 years old, he completed his graduation from Presidency College Madras, securing first rank, with Gold Medals in Physics and English. He could not go abroad for higher studies as he was declared medically unfit to be able to withstand the English weather. Raman stayed back in India and completed his M.Sc. in Physics, topping in the University.

Raman appeared for the Indian Civil Services Competitive exam for the Finance department and he was the top scorer. He joined this department as Assistant Accountant General in Calcutta in 1907. He also conducted research in Indian Association for Cultivation of Science. During this period, Raman published 30 papers in world renowned magazines like Nature, The Philosophical Magazine and the Physical Review. In 1917, he was offered the post of Palit Professor of Physics in Calcutta University. He resigned his far more paying Government post and with considerable financial sacrifice, he accepted the prestigious Palit Professorship. In his 16-year stint there, he continued his research on acoustics, optics and physiology of human vision.

In one of his experiments in end 1927 – early 1928, he allowed monochromatic light from a mercury arc to pass through transparent materials, which were arranged to fall on a spectrograph, to record its spectrum. He observed some new lines in the spectrum, which were later called as ‘Raman Lines’ and his discovery was termed as ‘Raman Effect’.

In 1929, Raman was knighted by King George V of Great Britain. Confident of winning the Nobel Prize in 1930, Raman also booked his tickets in July, though it was only in November that the Nobel Awards would be declared. He ultimately won the 1930 Nobel Prize for Physics – the first non White and the first Asian to get the Nobel Prize in the sciences. It may surprise today’s science enthusiasts that his discovery was made with equipment worth hardly Rs. 300. From 1930 onwards, along with his own research, he also spared time for training young science researchers of our country and also foreign enthusiasts. In 1933, Raman became Director of the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.

In 1947, the new Government of independent India appointed him as the first ‘National Professor’. He was conferred the ‘Bharat Ratna’ in 1954.

CV Raman was not only a great scientist; he was a wonderful speaker too. His convocation ceremony speech at Agra University in 1950 proves that he was an excellent orator:

“I know poverty and misery and I quite appreciate by personal experience what it is to be poor, what it is to have no clothes, no books, what it is to struggle through life, what it is to walk through the streets without an umbrella, without conveyance along miles on dusty roads. I have been through it all and I can understand the difficulties that most of you graduates have to face today. I am speaking from a long experience of 60 years. Please do not imagine that all the 60 years are milk and roses. To be able to accomplish something, I want to tell you that you have to go through such experience.

I admit, success is not always to the intelligent or the strong and it is to some extent a bit of a gamble, but nonetheless those who have got their minds right, and those who know their job, will sooner or later, sooner perhaps than later, make their way in life. But they should not be disappointed if they do not, they have to face up life and take it as they find it. This is the kind of philosophy that I have learnt by experience, and I make a free gift of it to you all.

What I say is this, that the great things in life are not really great things in life. The Nobel Prize, the F. R. S and the like, many of them leave a bitter taste in the mouth. What I love is to enjoy the common things of life.

I am happy that I am still able to sleep at night provided I have three miles walk in the evening. I am still able to enjoy a good lunch or dinner. I am still able to look at the blue sky and like it. I still like to walk in the open fields and like the smell of the Ragi or the Jowar. I feel a younger man when I see the Babul flower and say; God has given us these wonderful things. This is the real philosophy of life to appreciate what we see around us.

We think that happiness consists in going to pictures and seeing thrilling films and techni-colour dramas. Not at all, the great things in life are the God given things, which cost nothing. What you need is the desire to appreciate them. If you have your minds and hearts open, you have around you things which give you joy.

I study science not because anything is going to happen to me but because I find it is a kind of worship of this great Goddess Nature, of which we are a part. That has been my inspiration as a man of science. I feel now that is one thing that can always make a man happy, the small things in life not only in nature.... our old friends, old music and the things that we have around us. Many a time I would like to go back to them. It may be a sign of cynicism, but I would like to go back to the common things in life. A glass of cold water, for example, gives us vigour and freshness. I can assure you there is no pleasure in this world for a healthy man, than after a vigorous exercise or doing something hard, just to go home and have a glass of cold water. If you have lost the capacity to appreciate that, you may as well drink a cup of hemlock, as Socrates had to do.

I have another word to say. We all speak of patriotism. What is patriotism? I want you to think it over and in the last analysis bring down patriotism to a physical term. I have thought over the problem. Patriotism as well as a number of things boil down to the love of earth. We are of the earth. When we die, we return to earth. Seeta was of the earth and returned to earth. This good earth sustains us. I think ultimately the love for the land means the love for the earth, which has borne us and which sustains us.

The more you help a man, the less grateful he is to you. It is however, our duty to help fellow human beings and we should not expect them to show any gratitude in return.

I never believe in manuscript eloquence or in after-dinner speeches carefully prepared 24 hours before hand. I always believe in standing up in front of my audience, appreciate the situation and speak to them heart to heart. I want you to think over what I have told you and see if some little thing that I have said may prove the seed of some great achievement on your part, sustain you, encourage you, elevate your hearts above and so push you on in life that you may rise triumphant over all the difficulties and all the troubles that are the common lot of the common man in India today”.

Note: For the benefit of the student community and young professionals, Dwarka Parichay publishing a series of articles on truly great personalities who have contributed to nation building. This will be useful to youngsters to know in-depth about our national heroes, who have sacrificed a large part of their lives for the sake of the country. Most of us have never had the opportunity of meeting these people to understand their greatness and qualities that set them a class apart.

Indeed, their lives, with their sincerity of purpose, along with their grit and determination to overcome all odds and their struggles will serve as role models for the current and future generations who, by and large are not aware of the giant contributions made by these truly great heroes in the fields of science and technology, industry, business, etc. The youth will definitely benefit by reading about these giants in their own fields. Even if a small percentage of our youth and students strive to follow the footsteps of these towering personalities, attempt to imbibe a scientific temper and if these articles instill a sense of patriotism among the youth, these articles will have served their purpose.

Nitin with Satish Koshik

21st century’s Rail-budget with a difference: More systematic reforms necessary

Guinness Record Holder for letters in Newspapers

Rail-budget for the year 2015-16 is certainly a budget with a difference when perhaps for the first time it had no political colour. It was a usual practice of earlier Railway Ministers of various parties and regimes that they used to shower rail-gifts for their constituencies and states. But this time stress is genuinely given on increasing passenger-facilities rather than on gimmick announcements of new trains.

Union Railway Minister should take care of increasing complaints about food-quality and unhygienic conditions where food to be served in trains is prepared. Also there is a sizable number of rail-passengers which do not consume rail-food because of some peculiar food-habits like ‘Jain Food’ without onion and garlic despite their being ‘forced’ compulsory paying cost of food with cost of rail-ticket in trains like ‘Rajdhani’ and ‘Shatabdi’. Variety of branded packaged food by reputed companies should be made available on payment of cost by giving sale-commission to rail staff. Abolishing charging food-cost with rail-fare will not only ensure hygiene but also will abolish ‘begging’ tips by rail-staff from the passengers. Rather scope of Indian Railway Catering & Tourism Corporation Limited (IRCTC) can be increased for preparing packaged food like is done in case of ‘Rail-Neer’ (mineral water). Such an increased activity of IRCTC can be further utilized for ‘Mid-Day’ meal scheme in schools where also similar problems are there because of fresh-cooked food.

Union Railway Ministry and Union Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs should formulate some system whereby cost of non-travel by Parliamentarians on their reserved accommodation may be charged from personal pockets of erring Parliamentarians. Presently it is quite often that Parliamentarians do not care to cancel reservation in case of non-travel because they have not to personally suffer any cost for non-travel resulting in usual ‘No vacancy’ chart especially in first-class air-conditioned rail-travel. Parliamentarians should be allowed free rail-facility only in second-class air-conditioned rail-travel with priority in reservation. Travel in higher class may only be on payment of cost-difference from personal pockets of Parliamentarians.

With Each Swine Flu Death the Claim for Good Health Governance in India stands Weak

Rakesh Manchanda

The officially announced 2015 death toll today is 842 and is still counting. Swine Flu does not pick the victim from groups like Rich-Poor or Hindu-Muslim. Why should UP High court scold Governments in their PIL hearing today for Swine Flu weak preparedness ? BJP acceptance of 1.55 crore donation from an Indian company trying to get its Swine flu vaccine approved is another untapped spin in Media.

What goes wrong when you shake hands with a Swine Flu suspect?
There is a grave possibility of transmission. An adult human body carries 70% fluids. Sweat , cold and cough droplet circulation via hand ensures a faster transfer of virus. Even using the same door handle by the victim can transmit the virus to new suspects.

As per a study H1N1 virus can stay alive for 24-48hrs on a door handle or any hard surface. On a tissue paper it remains for 15 minutes while on hand it parks for 30 minutes and on cloths for 8-12 hrs.

Swine Flu has less to do with eating meat or pigs but it has more to do with poor and corrupt health governance, weak regulations, rich-poor gap, unhygienic life style and unequal health expenditure.

Thanks to the New Delhi AAP government there is a check & freeze on the Swine Flu lab test charges with maximum limit of Rs.4500.Many reports indicate doctors overcharging in Max Hospital Dehradun. Cost of each disposable mask has gone up from Rs.5 to Rs.50.Black market and shortage of Tina Flu tabs continues outside Delhi.

After Mrs.& Mr. Obama-the Uranium and weapon Salesmen went back to America; the Swine Flu tide is on party in India. Hospitals are overcrowded and ICU are fully packed with 7 days isolation. There is a strange change in buzz. People are sad. You see no hand-shake, a hug and a passionate pat in lobbies. Schools are either closed or are banning collective gathers of prayers, sports events and outings etc. Uttrakhand government is giving funds to schools for regular hand wash habits in daily work after the death of a student in Dehradun.

America continues to spend as much as 9000 dollars per person per year wherein India expenditure on health is 3% of its GNP.

Thanks to the Modi Model there is a cut off 20% health budget. India today in Modi era is no more a proud low cost Pharma exporting nation of life saving medicines. Modi Model continues to sell false pride and equality dream of a superpower.

Obama take away from India was the unequal Nuclear `Sale` deal as, I had been discussing in my recent write ups. Obama left Indians with lessons on Religion, equality and make in India greetings called Namaste.

PM Modi wearing his famous London suit with pinstrips reading as Narender Damodar Das Modi reciprocated with a handshake instead of Namashkar.

Imagine a `No Handshake` hospital in modern times due to H1N1 fear?

Let us analyse understand the pattern of a more dangerous virus called Ebola with similar primary symptoms.

Ebola going global still with no cure is forcing today almost all 54 African nations to adopt a `No Handshake` Culture.

Indian greeting of `Namaskar` with folded hands or Chinese bow is more safe in Swine Flu and even during Ebola attack outside India.

H1N1 is the ultimate Indian test of cultural hygienic practices. Containing it is a matter of washing hands, covering cough, cold and using hygienic toilets, disposing used tissues and no spitting in public and so on.

If we do not have an effective garbage recycle plan as in India or in Africa, no sanitation system and no water purification plants in order and if we leave pigs and animal bodies out in the open for vultures to eat, then H1 N1 and Ebola like Virus will enjoy in full swing.

Doctors are helpless with 7 day isolation screening with no clear protocols. Hospital management are happy as the unhealthy season is delivering rush and rich collection. At times the primary symptoms of H1N1 and Pneumonia overlap and lab test reports take time.

Rich go to hospitals and come back after few days of getting monitored. Poor dare not go to hospital and volunteer for Swine Flu test as they are convinced it is curable. Careless attitude and negligence forces the victim to find that he is breathless and his lungs are damaged.

Funds for collective cure, preparedness, awareness in time to stop the chain of transmission can help outsmart this deadly virus once it slows down possibly before Holi with a change in weather as per past pattern.

Let us remain calm, promote Namaste, boost our immune system from self to the society for a better future and safer `desi` habits to overcome this manmade tragedy.

About author: Worked in African countries since 2006 and had been supporting International Red Cross, supporting awareness & education on Ebola Virus and worked with few NGOs as volunteer on Basic and Advance Life Support.

How Delhi can stop crying? !

Vijay K. Saluja
DIRECTOR,Giraffe Heroes India,

About Delhi & its suffering citizens, I rate the plight of commuters, who are daily stuck for hours together, in the traffic, jams as one of the primary issue for the new Delhi Govt to take note of & attempt innovative ways to solve it. I also may mention hers, about all those influential persons who can make a difference, but keep on suffering the traffic bottlenecks, snarls & some, while stuck in jams, continue reading newspapers, chatting on mobile, playing video games or working on laptops., etc etc.

When asked –don`t you have any solution, the stock reply is `Yaar time to bitana hai na`.`Hum kya kar sakte hain!?

But my submission is, if the things continue like this, what will be the fate of you , me & all of us five years from now, ten years from now & later?? Have U given a thought?

It wont`be a surprise , when half of the working hours, then, will be spent in going to work & half in coming back to home!

When will we work?
What about stresses?
petrol consumption?
attending to nature-calls etc etc?

The future scenario, I visualize, is going to be horrendous, if we all do not stir from our apathy, complacency, criticism & self centredness.

I gave examples of life in seventies & eighties to just emphasise the point that how over the years `dekhte dekhte, life kitni badal gayi hai`!

Well, if you are happy about the present situation, then there is nothing to say about

But, interactions with many, only buttress the point, that no one is happy with the worsening situation in our cities but are either complacent or helpless to correct the situation as their various efforts to correct the situation, have not brought in the desired results!
Interestingly, some also say why do you write for a blog instead of national newspapers or why do you write at all? My humble submission is – First improve your neighbourhood, instead of improving the world & writing is a call of conscience.

We already have conferences/ seminars- diarrohea in our metros in particular where-in, year in year out, most of the recommendations, do not change for years?!

The urgent need is implementation of the recommendations.

But, the state of affairs certainly need change for the positive, in the interest of sustainability of living & living happily, wherever we are.

How to go about it?

Well, here are a few of the many suggestions, to take care of your neighbourhood, colonies, cities & its infrastructure----First assumption- Do not totally be dependent upon the Govt. That does not mean that they have no role to play. In fact, it is the primary role of the govt/ civic bodies & thus it`s officials are meant to provide the needed services. But the community have to play complementary/ supplementary role.

Second assumption- Majority of the govt. officials & the politicians etc are well meaning people, but , they regrettably are mute majority!! The ones, who are in the business of `milking the system` are connected, united & vociferous lot & happen to corner the influential postings in almost every departments of the city-organisations, by various means?! Yes, it is a sad fact.

That also does not mean that they will not listen to the citizen`s grievances. They are also efficient, some rather more efficient. So, they are also in the position to solve the problems.

So what to do?

The New Govt can to my mind immediately take measured steps to tackle this horrendous situation head-on?

Along with finding solutions to traffic-jams, parking mess in all areas of Delhi as well need urgent attention?

Well , all the areas of Delhi [rather any city] are divided into sub areas, which is the jurisdiction of an officer in each deptt .To give example-

In any municipal corporation., there is

Civil Engg Department
Electrical Engg Deptt
Architect Deptt
Finance Deptt
Health Deptt
Enforcement Department
Horticulture Department
Property Tax Department
Public Relations Department .
Each department is headed by Heads of Departments who are assisted by battery of junior officers in a hierarchical order.

For example under chief engineer there will be additional/ superintending engineers, executive engineers, assistant engineers, junior engineers [overseer in common parlance] who have battalion of skilled/ unskilled workers under them to attend to various complaints of civil engg nature.

So, is the story for the other departments./organisations.

All these departments are overseen by persons in administration-Commissioner, Addl Commissioner, Directors , Secretary of the local body plus the Vigilance Head-to take care of the complaints about corruption & harrassment.

In addition to this, there are elected representatives[representing every area of the city],& members of various committees, plus with them, allocation of individual local area development funds{LAD]

Now what should RWA & TWA & ordinary citizen do?

First of all, they need to be united & [each member] must have the directory, giving latest contact numbers of these officials.

Please ring them as & when there is any thing amiss..

If person at one level does not perform, move on to the next level. I am sure, things will start turning for the better in the attendance of complaints. At the moment ask your self, how many up-to date contact numbers U have? Be true to yourself.

Secondly RWAs & TWAs have also to play pro-active role in keeping the area around their neighbourhood spruced up by supplementary efforts.

TWA have to play large role in checking the encroachment of common spaces, proper parking of vehicles, keeping a look on the upkeep of corridors & public conveniences.Presently, the markets & even newly sprung shopping malls are in a mess.
Colonies are no better, what with car-explosion.

They also need to keep close rapport with the assigned officials of their area..,
Though there will be some unscruplous & uncaring elements in the administration, but do not get disappointed & discouraged.
This is a challenge, to overcome their apathy.BE UNITED. It helps.

The new Govt need to set up a DIRECTORATE of COMMUNITY RELATIONS who should aggressively seek in innovative ways help of the community.

Instituting awards for the good officials/ performers in their areas, is a good morale booster & motivational exercise & does help in better productivity & maintaining good relations.

Noise pollution, poster pollution, unauthorized construction, encroachment of common spaces & many other civic services will improve, if the citizens & the community keep a vigilant eye on sustainable basis & with unity of purpose.

But , the big problem also, is

If some of the citizens-commuters, residents, traders themselves are not law abiding & use speed money for their illegal practices!

In that situation, what can one do if there is no unity of purpose, self interests rule the roosts, ego-trips are there. Then, only God can save our cities.!

I suggest,then be a God`s representatives[Doot]
I feel, Even `God` is disappointed with our state of affairs & HE has many other things to do.

So friends, I have only suggested a few of the possible easy solutions. Try it faithfully. Things will start turning for the better, I am sure.

Though, there are many many other [legal,RTI,vigilance etc etc.]routes/ways, too?

If there is any counseling / help needed, do let me know.

But pl mind, this is a sustainable activity of the community-of men, women, children & not an isolated[or one day] one, if we need better & vibrant cities & want optimum utilization of public [that is your own] funds.

Each day may/will test your ingenuity & need innovative solutions by involving community.Use community as a big resource.

Do work for it.

You will find it a worthwhile exercise.Life will acquire a different meaning, without much money!

Huna –Mystic Power of the Ancients

Geeta Jha

The word HUNA means secret in Hawaiian. It refers to a body of knowledge that has its origins in antiquity. In many ways it is a mystery school. The body of information we call HUNA was not openly discussed and it was appararently never written down. The techniques were passed from initiate to initiate for thousands of generations. The initiates were called KAHUNA [keeper of secrets]. KAHUNA possess the divine power to perform miracles but they also possessed an incredible esoteric knowledge.

HUNA is a system of mind, body, spirit integration and healing. In HUNA psychology there are three selves in one man. The three selves of HUNA are the lower self, the middle self, the higher self. They are so called because of their psychical locations. The lower-self is located in that area of body known as "SOLAR PLEXUS''. The middle-self is located in the head and the higher-self is situated at about five feet above the head.

The Lower-self is equated to subconscious mind, middle self is commonly referred to conscious mind, whereas Higher-self is used for super conscious minds. The Middle-self is our awakened conscious mind that is part of us which we are mostly aware and by which we reason, think and make decisions. The Lower-self is the sea of feeling and emotions. The Lower-self can be commanded and instructed to do things by middle self.

The Higher-self is the spiritual part of man being the most enlighten part of his nature. It is located five feet above the body and connected to right side of head by means of a silver cord. The Higher-self is so close to us actually longs to help us through our difficulties. It has power to solve them in a very definite manner, if only we would seek its help. It is a curious fact that high self never intervene in one's affair unless its help is specifically asked for.

You have to learn to communicate with your Higher-self and a new life of unlimited happiness, love and accomplishment can be yours. The three selves are connected by means of an invisible cord which KAHUNA called AKA-CORD.

Nothing alive exits without life force energy when someone died he stopped breathing. Hence breath or "Mana" becomes the symbol of life force energy.

KAHUNA reorganizes the vital importance of PRANIC energy in performing miracles. The PRANA is the substance with which we want to accomplish some objectives for us. The PRANA is breathed in by the conscious Middle-self and is sent up to Higher-self. The Middle-self takes the PRANA then the Lower-self converts it and Higher-self uses it.

HUNA RITUAL OUTLINED: Click for Huna Video

*Sit comfortably with closed eyes. Take 7 or 8 deep breaths. Completely aware of vital prana entering your body
*Now visualise the absorbed prana being converting into a very high voltage silver white ball in your solar plexus.
*Now see a tremendous flow of white light surging up out of your solar plexus. Like an active volcano erupting thousands of volts of shattering spiritual electricity.
*As this light shoots out of your head see it widen into a ball of about four or five feet diameter.
*You are now making contact with Higher-self.
*Now without hesitation see within this circle of light that you seek as being already accomplished. *Believe that it is already yours.
*Now feel totally and completely that your goal is already accomplished. Believe that it is already on its way to you.
*Now thank your Higher-self for accomplishing your will.
*You should aim to perform the ritual every day until your goal is completely achieved.
*Do not despair if nothing happened after a few weeks .Your higher self will never let you down. *Trust in it completely. It will answer your dreams.
