International Seminar on the legality and Jurisprudence of Sallekhana / Santhara / Samadhimaran/Prayopavesa in the Indian Traditions


National Law University, Delhi (NLUD) and International School for Jain Studies (ISJS) will jointly organizing a two days International Seminar 2016 on the Legality and Jurisprudence of Sallekhanā / Santhārā / Samādhimaraṇa/Prāyopaveśa in the Indian Traditions. Here we discussed Legal, jurisprudential, social-political-economical perspectives of Sallekhanā on 26th to 27th February 2016. In this International Seminar there will be following topics cover:

A. Legal and Jurisprudential perspectives: a. IPC Sections 306 (attempts to commit suicide) and 309 (abetment to suicide), b. Colonial-era criminal laws vs. Indian Traditions and modern trends, c. Constitutional precedents, like right to life and death; religious freedom of minorities and Articles 21, 25, 26, 29 of the Constitution of India, d. Perspectives from the judicial systems.

B. Social-political-economic perspectives: a. Moral and ethical considerations, risks/gains, and dangers/benefits; social and individual perspectives, b. Economic and marketing angle, c. effect of religious and ethnic diversity and approaches towards life and death in the globalized world, d. the contrast Killing others vs. Santhārā, e. Establish a code to differentiate it from suicide.

The Inaugural function will start on 26th Feb. at 10’o clock. The program will start by the Mangalacharan and Ashish by Rev. Lokesh Muni ji, welcome speech by Prof. Ranbir Singh, VC, NLU, Sh. Nirmal Sethi, Chief-Guest Sh. Nirmal Kr Sethi, Chairman, Jain Consultative Group on Sallekhanā/ Santhāra: Social aspect, Dr. Shugan C Jain will introduce the theme of the seminar and Dr. Prasannanshu will present the vote of thanks.

In this International seminar, there will be more than 30 papers and one special session for judges and lawyers for discussing the legal aspect of Sallekhan/Santhara. More than 30 National and International scholars will be sharing their views.

The Valedictory session will be held on 27th Feb at 4PM. The chief guest of the function is Prof. GS Bajpai, Registrar, NLU. In this session book release of Poetic Reflections on Death, a collection of Dr. Prasannanshu’s Poems would be done.

This Seminar will be conducted and coordinated by Dr. Prasannanshu, Associate Professor, NLU, Delhi and Dr. Navin Kr Srivastav, Joint Director, International School for Jain Studies.
